Home > Netherlands > Amsterdam > Where to Stay

Stay near the canal belt and Amsterdam becomes markedly better.

Where you stay in Amsterdam determines whether the city feels refined or merely crowded. For most men, the best base is in or just beside the canal belt, especially south or west of the busiest station-to-Dam corridor. That gives you architectural calm, better morning atmosphere, and easy access to both museums and nightlife. If gay bars and clubs matter most, staying within walking distance of Reguliersdwarsstraat works well, but there is little reason to sleep directly in the loudest part of the center. Amsterdam is compact enough that you can choose elegance without sacrificing convenience. Mature travelers usually do best in hotels that feel residential, polished, and quietly efficient rather than overtly fashionable.
