About

Volkshotel stands on Wibautstraat in Amsterdam East, beside the metro and a short walk from the Amstel. The area is more functional than picturesque, with wide roads, university buildings and apartment blocks rather than canals and historic facades. Still, the hotel feels rooted in this part of the city. Occupying the former headquarters of the newspaper de Volkskrant, arrival is immediate and energetic, with reception folded into a large open lobby filled with people working, drinking coffee and moving between floors.

The building retains much of its former office structure, and the interiors make no attempt to disguise it. Concrete floors, exposed ceilings, graphic references to the newspaper and industrial materials give the hotel a rougher, more creative atmosphere than most Amsterdam stays. Standard rooms are simple and compact, with dark timber, metal details and practical bathrooms. The more interesting option is one of the “special rooms,” each designed by a different artist or designer, ranging from playful to eccentric. Noise is moderate throughout the building, particularly at weekends, though rooms on the upper rear floors are quieter.

Public life is the reason to stay here. The ground floor lobby works as a café, co-working space and informal meeting point from early morning onward. On the seventh floor, Canvas restaurant and bar attracts a younger local crowd with panoramic views across Amsterdam, while weekends often continue late into the night. Above that, the Badplaats rooftop has hot tubs and a sauna overlooking the city. There is more happening here than in almost any other Amsterdam hotel, and the building often feels closer to a social club than a place to sleep.

The crowd is creative, international and noticeably younger than at Sir Albert or The Hoxton. Expect freelancers, designers, solo travelers, groups of friends and men in their thirties and forties who are as interested in the atmosphere as the room itself. It suits a social weekend, a first stay in Amsterdam East or anyone who wants to be slightly outside the center without losing energy. Within Amsterdam’s hotel scene, Volkshotel is less polished than The Hoxton, less luxurious than Conservatorium and considerably more fun than either.

In Context

A creative east-side hotel for travellers who want rooftop energy and a less predictable Amsterdam base.

At a glance

Weekend noise carries upward from Canvas and the rooftop bar.

Good to Know

The standard rooms are acceptable for a short stay, but the artist-designed special rooms are what make Volkshotel distinctive and are worth reserving well in advance. For quieter nights, avoid lower floors facing Wibautstraat and ask for an upper-floor room at the rear. Canvas becomes noticeably busier after sunset, particularly on Friday and Saturday, while the rooftop hot tubs are best early in the morning before the bar opens.

Why Go

Volkshotel matters because it offers something few Amsterdam hotels do: a stay that feels genuinely tied to the city’s creative life. The lobby, rooftop and public spaces are used as much by locals as by guests, which gives the building more energy and relevance than most design hotels. It suits travelers who want atmosphere, conversation and a less polished side of Amsterdam. Compared with The Hoxton, it is rougher and more alternative. Compared with citizenM, it has far more character and far stronger public life.

The reason

For Amsterdam’s most creative hotel atmosphere and its strongest rooftop energy.
