About

INK Hotel sits just behind Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal, between Amsterdam Central Station and Dam Square. The area is busier and less polished than the canal belt, with trams, cyclists and a steady stream of visitors moving toward the center. The hotel itself is tucked into the former headquarters of the Dutch newspaper De Tijd, and arrival feels noticeably calmer once inside. The transition from the crowded street to the dark, quiet lobby is part of its appeal.

The building’s journalistic history runs through the interiors without becoming theatrical. Corridors are lined with graphic details, black-and-white references and subtle typography, while the rooms are more restrained. Concrete Architects have given them a masculine, contemporary look with dark wood, leather details, charcoal fabrics and low lighting. Entry-level rooms are compact and efficient rather than memorable, but the larger Superior and Deluxe rooms feel much more balanced. Bathrooms are finished in black tile and glass, with strong showers and practical layouts. Rooms at the front can pick up some street and tram noise, while those facing the courtyard are considerably quieter.

PRESSROOM is the center of the hotel and works better than most hotel restaurants in this part of Amsterdam. During the day it has the atmosphere of a local brasserie and informal workspace, with guests mixing easily with residents and people from nearby offices. In the evening, the bar becomes more useful than stylish: a place for a drink before dinner or after returning from the city rather than a destination in itself. There is also a small internal courtyard which offers a surprisingly quiet place to sit during warmer months.

The crowd is international, practical and slightly older than at The Hoxton. Expect couples, solo travelers and well-dressed men using the hotel as a comfortable base rather than somewhere to spend the entire evening. It suits a first visit to Amsterdam, particularly if you want to be within walking distance of Central Station, Dam Square and the canal belt without paying canal-house prices. Within Amsterdam’s hotel scene, it sits between mainstream chain comfort and more character-driven boutique stays.

In Context

A sharp city hotel that works well when Amsterdam Central, the canal belt and nightlife all need to stay close.

At a glance

Courtyard-facing rooms are noticeably quieter than those facing the street.

Good to Know

The Superior and Deluxe rooms are worth the difference over the smaller Classic categories, which can feel tight for more than a short stay. For quieter nights, ask for a room facing the internal courtyard rather than Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal. The most pleasant place to spend time is the courtyard behind PRESSROOM, particularly in the late afternoon when the front of the hotel becomes busier with arrivals and restaurant guests.

Why Go

INK Hotel is one of the few hotels near Central Station that avoids feeling anonymous or overly corporate. Its former newspaper headquarters gives it more character than the larger chain hotels nearby, while the interiors remain understated and practical. It works particularly well for travelers who want easy access to the station and old center, but still prefer somewhere with a more adult atmosphere. Compared with nearby hotels around Dam Square, it feels calmer and more considered. Compared with canal-house boutique hotels, it is easier, less expensive and more functional.

The reason

For a quieter, better-designed alternative near Central Station.
