About

citizenM Amstel stands on Sarphatistraat near Weesperplein, just east of the canal belt and a short walk from the Amstel River. The location feels more local and less polished than the western canal district, with trams, cafés and university buildings nearby rather than boutiques and galleries. Arrival is fast and deliberately impersonal. Guests check themselves in at kiosks before moving directly into the large, open-plan living room.

The hotel occupies a former bank building from the 1920s, though very little of that history remains visible inside. The interiors follow citizenM’s familiar formula: dark walls, contemporary art, low sofas and bright design objects arranged around a large communal lobby. Rooms are compact and highly standardized. Every room is essentially the same, with a large bed pushed against the window, strong blackout blinds and an iPad controlling the lights, curtains and temperature. The layout works efficiently for one or two nights, though there is little storage and very limited privacy in the bathroom, where the shower and toilet sit behind frosted glass. Noise is generally low, particularly in rooms away from Sarphatistraat.

Public life is centered entirely around the canteenM lounge and bar. The space works throughout the day as an informal co-working area, coffee spot and place to sit with a laptop. By evening, the mood becomes more social but never especially local. Most people staying here use the hotel as a base before heading elsewhere into the city. There is no proper restaurant, spa or gym, although the lobby remains open around the clock and serves drinks and simple food at all hours.

The crowd is younger and more international than at most Amsterdam hotels, with solo travelers, creative professionals and couples in their thirties and forties. It suits travelers who value convenience, technology and a straightforward stay over atmosphere or local character. Within Amsterdam’s hotel scene, citizenM Amstel sits above the city’s generic chain hotels but below stronger design-led options such as The Hoxton or Sir Albert.

In Context

A practical design base for travellers who want central access without committing to classic canal-house luxury.

At a glance

Rooms are small and identical, but rear-facing floors stay quieter.

Good to Know

All rooms are effectively identical, so there is little reason to pay extra beyond securing a quieter position away from Sarphatistraat. Ask for one of the higher floors facing the rear of the building, where traffic noise is lower and the rooms feel calmer. The lobby is busiest in the morning and early evening; if you want to work there, late afternoon is noticeably quieter.

Why Go

citizenM Amstel matters because it offers a more polished and design-conscious alternative to Amsterdam’s standard business hotels. The location is convenient, the technology works well and the lobby is useful if you plan to spend part of the day working or meeting someone informally. It suits short city stays, particularly for solo travelers or visitors arriving by train or metro. Compared with Motel One Waterlooplein, it feels more contemporary and more social. Compared with The Hoxton or Hotel V Nesplein, it is noticeably less personal and less rooted in the city.

The reason

For a smarter, more efficient base away from the busiest center.
