About

Wilmina is reached through the former Charlottenburg courthouse and a sequence of courtyards that gradually removes Kantstraße from view. The hotel occupies the old women’s prison behind it, but the conversion does not erase the building’s history or exploit it as a theme. Narrow circulation, retained brick, layered gardens and carefully opened communal spaces turn enclosure into privacy. The result feels discovered rather than announced.

Rooms are restrained and often compact, with pale materials, good light and details shaped by the inherited structure. The strongest experience lies in the whole complex: garden paths, a quiet bar, Lovis restaurant, the Amtsalon cultural space and a small rooftop pool and sauna. Service is calm and capable, while the building creates natural separation between overnight guests and public visitors. This is premium rather than full-service luxury, but the architecture gives it destination value.

Wilmina works particularly well for a second Berlin visit, a design-focused stay or anyone who wants western access without a conventional boulevard hotel. It is not close to the Schöneberg bar circuit on foot, and the cellular history means room proportions vary. Choose it for the sequence of spaces and the rare sense of retreat; choose elsewhere when a large room, busy lobby or extensive spa is central.

In Context

Combine the stay with restaurant Lovis, Charlottenburg galleries and quiet mornings.

At a glance

Historic cells shape room proportions, so category and exact position matter.

Good to Know

Ask about room size, window position and distance from lifts before confirming. The historic structure creates meaningful differences between categories, and the most photogenic room is not automatically the most practical for a longer stay.

Reserve Lovis separately and plan time to walk the full complex in daylight. The rooftop pool and sauna are small recovery facilities, not a social spa scene, and should be valued accordingly.

Why Go

Wilmina is one of Berlin’s most convincing adaptive-reuse stays because the architecture changes how the visit feels. The route through courts and gardens creates distance from the street, while the restaurant, bar and cultural spaces give the complex enough life to avoid becoming precious or museum-like.

It works best when quiet, material detail and intelligent conversion matter more than conventional hotel scale. The compact rooms and western location are real compromises, but neither undermines the distinctiveness of the stay.

The reason

A difficult building transformed with restraint, privacy and an exceptional sense of arrival.
